Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, orders direct strike on Israel over Hamas leader killing

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered Iran to launch a direct attack on Israel in retaliation for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, the New York Times reported, citing three Iranian officials.

Khamenei gave the order at an emergency meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council on July 31 in which he announced that Haniyeh had been killed.

The Indian Embassy in Beirut has issued a stern warning to Indian nationals, advising them not to travel to Lebanon and urging people in the country to leave the country due to rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The warning comes in the wake of escalating hostilities that began on October 8 last year, with frequent clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border.

In a recent development, Israel carried out an airstrike targeting Fuad Shakoor, a senior Hezbollah commander in southern Beirut, who is accused of planning a deadly rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The strike, which led to Shakoor’s death, has raised concerns about further violence in the area.

“Indian nationals are strongly advised not to travel to Lebanon until further notice,” the embassy advisory, which was shared on social media, pointed out possible threats in the region. For those in Lebanon, the embassy calls for caution, limited movement, and maintaining contact through email and emergency phone numbers provided.

The urgent need for the embassy’s message has been exacerbated by regional instability, as indicated by the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and subsequent threats of retaliation by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The incidents have fuelled fears of a wider regional conflict, prompting Iran to convene an emergency security meeting to plan further measures.
