India has strongly condemned Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s statement about the treatment of Indian Muslims. In a post on X (former Twitter), the Iranian leader referred to the suffering of Muslims around the world, including India, Myanmar and Gaza.
He said that these difficulties are part of a larger problem affecting the Muslim Ummah. Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s statement was made on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad and was seen as an attempt to highlight the struggles faced by Muslims around the world.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi was quick to respond, calling the remarks “misinformation and unacceptable”. “We strongly condemn the statements made by the Supreme Leader of Iran regarding minorities in India.
The timing of Khamenei’s statement adds to the complexity of India’s diplomatic relations. India has significant ties with both Iran and Israel, two countries that are often at odds, especially with the recent increase in hostilities between Iran and Israel.
India’s relations with Iran are particularly important due to its dependence on crude oil imports from West Asia. Tehran is one of the largest suppliers of crude oil to India and both countries express mutual concern over terrorism emanating from Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Furthermore, the development of Chabahar port in Iran is a strategic project for India, which provides an important trade link to Central Asia and Afghanistan bypassing Pakistan.
