99% of India's new ministers are crorepatis and 40% have criminal cases against them

“Those who make decisions for us must come from within our communities, and from similar walks of life” is a common vision of all of us for a perfect inclusive society. But does that happen? No!

The Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed shocking results about the formation of the third cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, revealing that 28 ministers are embroiled in criminal cases. According to the report, 19 of these ministers face serious charges, ranging from attempted murder to crimes against women and hate speech.

The organisation classifies serious criminal offences with a maximum sentence of five years or more, non-bailable, or related to causing loss to the state exchequer.

The two BUP leaders from West Bengal, two ministers, have cases of attempt to murder and crimes against women registered against them. These ministers include Shantanu Thakur, elected from Bangaon, and Sukanta Majumdar, MP from Balurghat.

A total of eight ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, have announced cases related to hate speech.

Of the 71 ministers, 70 or about 99 per cent had assets worth more than Rs 1 crore, the analysis showed. The average assets of ministers is = 107.94 crore, of which six ministers have declared assets of more than Rs 100 crore.

Meanwhile, the age distribution among the new ministers shows a combination of experience and youthful enthusiasm. Ministers are aged between 31 and 80 years, while 47 ministers (66 per cent) are between 51 and 70 years of age. Furthermore, 11 ministers (15%) have studied only up to Class 12, while 57 (80%) have a graduate or higher degree. Three ministers are diploma holders.
